REPLENISH

During the winter season at the beach near our home, the sand washed out revealing a rocky bottom which was more than four feet beneath the normal surface level.  For over eight months, the beach shoreline slowly recovered through the constant tides and powerful wave surges.  Just as each new day brought a little more sand to replenish the beach, every morning brings forth hope to live as “new creations.”

Like the sand being replenished over time, my process is slow and reflective, applying materials one layer per day over the course of many months.  These materials include pulverized mineral pigments (azurite, malachite, turquoise, coral), ground sand and oyster shells, silver and gold.  Each layer is an abstraction of natural beauty captured in time and memory.  Creating the work offers a space to grapple with truths from my faith journey such as what it means to live out life as a “new creation.”

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
